Eventually it was time to wobble off and find our first night’s accommodation in Ypres.

After another hour or so of riding, we found our accommodation for the evening – Camping Jeugstadion. This was a pretty good holiday park, about 5 minutes ride from town. We just had time for a quick shower before we jumped back on the bikes to get to the Menin Gate before 8pm.

The Menin Gate is a famous war memorial for the British and Commonwealth soldiers who died around Ypres in the First World War. As an expression of gratitude from the Belgian people, every evening at 8pm, a bugler sounds the Last Post. Sometimes, like tonight, there is an extended ceremony.

After the ceremony we went for a walk around the gate and the town ramparts.

Then we found a nearby bar for a beer and some dinner, before heading back to our cabin.
